Communications from the Colonial Secretary I think it will be expedient to bring to your notice. You will deem it of importance to ascertain if there is anything you can do in the shape of urgent planting or other work early in the Day.
I will tell you when I will put it into Effect with due care, and I am very glad to do so. For this purpose you might like to come to the office to discuss preliminary arrangements. If so, you will find me here generally till 5.30 PM.

Memorandum by the Most Noble, with reference to the 21st paragraph of M. Ford's Report in the Gazette of the 31st instant, I have no objection, in compliance with the Surveyor General's request, to put in writing my recollection of the interview passed with the Maries.
In pursuance of your instructions, I was introduced by the Surveyor General to M. Maries and spent about four hours with him in the inspection of the Gardens.
M. Maries informed me he had been experimenting on the best methods of packing plants for long journeys, as he was about to leave for Japan and was asked to be allowed to take in one of our forcing frames some of the plants experimentally packed which had got very sickly, though he thought them a good sight.
